2002 TEXAS CHAMPIONSHIP
CEDAR CREEK LAKE

By Donna McKee

Final day of the Championships and the conditions were ideal. The only thing that made the fisherman nervous was the wind switching to the east and the fact that everyone was on fish. After the first day yielding 363 fish at 820.07lbs everyone knew that one good bag of fish could put them at the top. Greg McFaddan and John Fleming from the DFW division were only hoping that they could put together another good sack, but Jerry and Pat Gold of the Alamo division had other plans and that was to take home the two 1st place Bass Cat boats and that they did with a first day sack of 15.52lbs and a second day limit of 19.17lbs to bring them to win with 34.69lbs.

1st Place - (10 bass / 34.69lbs) Jerry and Pat Gold of the Alamo Division said that they used buzz baits and spinner baits. Pat said the spinner bait she used was the one they were given at the registration and Jerry was using Lunker lure buzz baits. This team used this plan of action on both days to start their day. The first day they started with their shallow pattern on long tapering points and had their limit by about 11am then moved into major creeks about half the way back using the creek channel they switched to fire tiger crankbaits (Hot Lips Lure Jensen) and she went to rigging a watermelon red worm. They reported losing 2 big fish the first day. On the second day they started shallow again and then moved to the creek channels that they thought would produce better quality fish and it did the trick. They only lost one fish that day and had their limit by 10:30am. Jerry said that after pre-fishing they decided not to fish the boat docks because they hadn't produced the quality of fish that it would take to win. Kistler and Castaway rods were used by Jerry, while Pat was using custom rods, both were using Shimano reels with Stren Easy Cast line. Jerry and Pat Gold would like to thank their tournament directors Bill and Connie Bales, 2 Guys Marine in Del Rio, Texas, Bullet Boats, Mercury Motors, Stanley Baits, Motorguide and Pinpoint. Congratulation in being our new Texas Division Championship winners.

2nd Place - (10 bass / 33.30lbs ) Dewey Freeman and Roger Cavqzos went to shallow coves by a small marina the first day flipping jigs and had their limit by 8am and had 11 keepers for the day. Then they went to deeper points with trees on them rigging. Dewey said he missed a 9lb fish on a dock that made him sick first thing that morning and hoped the day would get better after that. He said that after that they went to catching 3-4 pound fish the rest of the day. One partner is better shallow and one deep, but together they made a solid pair. They had 13.79lbs. the first day. On the second day the couldn't get it going on the docks after losing a 5 pounder so they went deep the rest of the day. They had a spot where they tied up for 45 minutes and rotated to 3-4 others close by rigging with a 3' leader, 4" Zoom Dead Ringer worm, greenpumkin with the tip barely dipped and that seemed to make the difference. They stayed and moved around in the same area at different angles and had 18 keeper fish. They were using Bass Pro Shop rods and Shimano and Abu Garcia reels strung with Berkley Big Game and Trilene Extra Tough line. They would like to thank Javaline and Nitro Boats, Mercury and Johnson Motors, and Motorguide. Congratulations on winning the 2nd Place Bass Cat Boat

3rd Place - (10 bass / 30.44lbs ) Greg McFaddan and John Fleming after being in the lead on the first day of the Championship only fell two spots to finish in 3rd place overall. They started out in the creeks again today but weren't satisfied with the size of fish they were catching so they went to the docks today. Using Terminator spinnerbaits, Gambler tubes and 4" bacon rinds they came short of the impressive 1st day catch of 20.10lbs only catching 10.34lbs but that was enough to keep them in 3rd place overall. Not to mention the 3rd place Big Bass for the tournament of 6.49lbs to add to their winnings to total a nice $4,000.00 prize for their efforts. Greg and John would like to thank Terminator Spinner baits, Gambler Soft Plastics, Motorguide, Pinpoint, Diachi, X-Point hooks, St. Croix Rods, P-Line and their wife's who have supported them the year.

1st Place Big Bass Winner 8.04lbs - Rickie Goodman fished alone with a Fire Tiger DD22, and Rattle Traps in the Clear Creek Arm in about 12' of water. Rickie missed 3 fish that morning before catching this nice bass about 10:30am, he said he found it hard to concentrate after that but finally had his limit by 2:30. Rickie would like to thank Kistler Rods, Witt Marine in Baytown, Lake Fork tackle, Triton Boats, Lowrance, Motorguide, and Stern.

1st Big Bass Rickie Goodman 8.04lbs.
2nd Big Bass Brian & Johnny Merrifield 6.61lbs.
3rd Big Bass Greg McFadden & John Fleming 6.49lbs.
