August 24, 2003 - The final qualifying tournament of the 2003 NW Alabama Angler's Choice was held on Wilson and Pickwick Lakes. With less than one point separating 1st and 2nd place on the Angler's of the Year standings, Mike Davis and Van Schwendimann knew that to win the title they needed big limit of fish. Their strategy paid off with the help of the deep jig bite they found on the upper end of Wilson Lake. "We caught fish all day in 20-25 foot of water. Van caught most of the fish on an LB Lures clear water jig in watermelon and pumpkinseed." according to Davis. Mike and Van's 1st place limit weighed 19.03 lbs and earned them $1415 plus a $1000 BassCat Bonus Bucks certificate.

2nd place went to the team of Tony Johnson and Barry Gillespie with 15.71 lbs and 5.46 lb Big Bass. A black and blue jig around deeper and cooler water helped them claim $855 total with Big Bass.

Jonathan Newton and Danny Leibecki finished the year strong with 15.21 lbs and $365 and 3rd place. Monroe Tidwell and Grover Tidwell weighed in 14.29 lbs for 4th place and $265. 5th place went to Ferlin Weeks and Phil Phillips with 12.72 lbs and $225.

The Angler's of the Year race came down to the last tournament between Davis/Schwendimann and Sam Mize and Bill Dillard. With their win, Davis and Schwendimann are the 2003 NW Alabama Team Trail Angler's of the Year. Mize and Dillard finished 2nd in the AOY standings, Clay Fritts and Jeff Stearn placed 3rd in the final year to date standings.
