06/27/09 - Stevens / Bernal Beat the Heat to take The Win at Delta

This was the last stop for the Mother Lode Region of 100% BASS WRL which was held on the Delta out of Russo's Marina.  A few anglers came to sign-up on Friday afternoon and get some insight on what baits were "hot" for catching bass in the area.

The tide was the opposite from the week before and so was the weather.  From last Saturday to this Saturday, it was like a light switch went on and so did the heat.  As temperatures climbed into the triple digits, making ideal fishing conditions for several anglers, others struggled to bring in limits.  This was not the case for the team of Scott Stevens and Vincent Bernal both from Los Banos who met the heat head on and brought to the scales the winning weight for this tournament, giving them First Place.  They had a limit that weighed 22.53 lbs. and the Fourth Place Big Fish.  Their bass were weighed in two separate bags then the weights were added together so the scales didn't "tilt".  They took home $1825 in winnings to go along with their trophies.  They started off the morning in Franks Track on the high tide then went towards Stockton to fish Disappointment Slough following the mats.  They fished swim baits, frogs and toads however most of their bass were caught on black and yellow frogs.  Great job guys and congratulations!

In Second Place was the team of Ron Howe from Elk Grove and Bob Miller from Sacramento who have been fishing several years with 100% BASS and have been strong supporters of the organization, brought to the scales a nice limit.  Ron caught the Big Fish of the tournament.  She was a toad weighing in at 8.75 lbs. giving them 20.61 lbs. total.  They were pleased to except winnings of $1375.  They told the crowd they used weightless worms and poppers to fish weeds and docks also frogs on mats in Sandmound and Dutch Sloughs to land their bass.  Great team work!

Robby Chikasawa from Sacramento, new member who joined 100% BASS after fishing the WRL - Persuader Bait Day tournament last week teamed up to fish with Keith Pineo from Citrus Heights and came in Third Place at this event.  They had a nice bag of bass weighing in at 19.49 lbs.  They told everyone they used swim baits and flippin' plastic worms in the Central Delta to catch their limit.  They took home $620 for their six hours on the water.  Congratulations guys and welcome aboard Robby!

Jim Scarberry from Orangevale and his partner of several years, Richard Moore from Rescue were happy to weigh in 19.32 lbs. giving them Fourth Place and $280 in cash and trophies to take home.  They had the Fifth Big Fish of the tournament as well.  Nice work guys!

Rounding out the top five teams and coming in Fifth Place was the Perez team, Dave from San Jose and Steve from Oakley.  Their bass weighed 18.93 lbs. They received winnings of $205 for their half day of fishing. Congratulations guy!

HENNECKE'S TOP THE SMALL BOAT DIVISION FOR THE SEASON FINALLY

The father and son team of John Hennecke Jr. from Sacramento and John Hennecke Sr. from Citrus Heights were proud to walk away with trophies for their winning weight in the Small Boat Division.  They had 10.11 lbs. taking the lead and told everyone they fished in the east Delta using crankbaits in rip rap to land their bass.  They were proud to walk away with their trophies to show their families and friends. Nice work team!

The Eye Surrender Sunglasses for the 20-20 Award will be awarded to the TOC as the team who came in twentieth place was not present to win.

Thirtieth Place Sponsor Gift Bag winners were Mike Sanders form Hughson and Matt Lindsey from Modesto who were happy to except their bags.

Fortieth Place Sponsor Gift Bags winners were not present to win their bags so they will be donated to the TOC.

A receipt was drawn with the name of Ron Weaver for a Sponsor Gift Bag however he had left prior to the Awards Ceremony so that bag will be donated to the TOC.

Boat number 14 was drawn for the Fenwick Rods however they will be donated to the TOC as this team left early.

Remember, you must be present to win the Fenwick Rods, Sponsor Gift Bags, the 20-20 Award - Eye Surrender Sunglasses and drawings for Sponsor Store Receipts.  There will be a lot of these prizes donated to the TOC by anglers who did not attend the Awards Ceremony and were not "present to win" giving the opportunity for other anglers the chance to win these nice prizes!

If you have won money, you will receive it when you meet up with us at one of the events or the TOC.  Winnings (cash) will not be mailed to you.   It is your responsibility to pick it up during the Awards Ceremony or in person at one of our tournaments.

We would like to thank the anglers who fished the WRL - Persuader Bass Bait tournament the week prior to this event and joined the WRL to fish the circuit.  It was great to meet new people and we look forward to getting to know you better as you fish with us.

My staff deserves a round of applause for making this event, like all the others a success.  It was hot and they worked hard to get the job done.  I cannot say enough about them.  Thanks to Kevin Ryan, Mike Tremont, Peter Kaprielian, Joel West and my wife Sheri for all their work.

Thank you to the staff at Russo's for another job, well done.  It is always a pleasure to have our tournaments at your facility.  Lisa, thank you for arriving in the middle of the night to open up the office for us and keep things running so smoothly for the anglers!
