5/30/09 BLACK/ HORTON CULL UP FOR THE WIN AT MELONES

This tournament was held on Melones Lake, the fourth stop in the Mother Lode Region of the WRL. The evening before this tournament was to start the sign-ups were held at Glory Hole Sports from 4 to 6 PM in Angels Camp where a handful of anglers showed up to ask questions on what the bite was on the lake and to get any information available to help with their strategies for the following day, hoping to make what they learned a success and give them a plan of action on the lake.

The forecast showed possible rain with a mix of lightening for Saturday and as the sky grew dark in the distance as the clouds rolled in, many anglers were concerned about lightening strikes however Mother Nature was kind to everyone who fished this event.  The outside air was cool as the sun made her appearance in the early morning growing closer to “safe light”; the angers positioned themselves for their boat number to be called.  The small boat was released followed by boat number 20 to lead the field out to their first stop of the day and their fishing began.

In the Large Boat Division, it took 12.92 lbs. to win at Melones. This team had the third largest bass of the tournament that weighed 5.17 lbs.  Steve Black from Merced and Jason Horton from Ceres walked up proudly to accept their winnings and trophies at the awards ceremony and were happy to share with the crowd how they caught their limit of bass. They used swim baits, spinner baits, top water plugs, rip baits, basically “trash fishing” to anchor their limit. They fished the main lake creeks and Glory Hole to the second bridge. Their winning weight gave them $985.00.  Congratulations guys!

Second Place went to Scott Stevens and Vincent Bernal both from Galt who brought their limit to the scales that weighed 12.52 lbs.  Their large bass weighed 5.18 lbs. giving them second place in Big Fish as well.  Their baits of choice were top water plugs and grubs with trailers while they fished the main body of the lake and coves with wood to catch their bass.  They were happy to leave with $680.00 and trophies to show for their efforts.  Not bad for a days work!

Dan Perkins Jr. and John Liechty both from Altaville took Third Place.  Dan caught the Big Fish of the tournament weighing in at 5.42 lbs. and added to their bag giving them a total of 12.04 lbs.  They told everyone they used spinner baits and fished top water plugs on points in the main lake to catch their limit.  They took home $570.00 for their day on the water.  Great job guys!

The team of Travis Huckaby from Patterson and Andy Lucas from Delhi came in Fourth Place with a weight of 11.96 lbs. and their big bass weighed in at 3.53 lbs. giving this team $165 to take home.  Congratulations guys.

Melanie from Glory Hole Sports donated two $25.00 Gift Certificates to be given away at this event.  These were given to the first two teams “out of the money” for Fifth Place and Sixth Place.  Taking Fifth Place was the team of Jordan Harris from Kerman and his partner Jon Ramos from Fresno who had a weight of 8.03 lbs. and their largest fish weighed 1.98 lbs.  In Sixth Place was the team of Jon Mc Manis of Salida and his partner Darren Cox of Modesto who weighed in a limit of bass totaling 7.92 lbs. with their largest bass of 2.80 lbs.  Congratulations guys for winning the $25.00 Glory Hole Sports Gift Certificates!

STEVE PESTER AND RON WEAVER WIN FIFTH PLACE OVERALL AND FIRST IN THE SMALL BOAT DIVISION

In the Small Boat, Steve Pester and Ron Weaver both from Oakdale are the team to recon with.  They have taken the top place in this division at several events which has proven you don’t have to fish out of a larger boat with a big motor to get on fish and to pull the lead in their division.  Their winning weight was 9.13 lbs. for their limit of bass.  They told everyone they used top water plugs in the Carson area of the lake.  For their efforts, they took home $130.00 along with their trophies.  That’s teamwork at its finest!

Twentieth Place for the Twenty - Twenty Eye Surrender Polarized Sunglasses was awarded to Jim James and Wes Remmers.  I think Jim will be calling Eye Surrender for a prescription pair of sunglasses and wear them proudly!

A special “Fishing Instructor” gift bag containing swim baits, courtesy of Optimum Baits was awarded to Patricia and Lonnie Owen at this event because at Don Pedro they left early to drive another team’s boat to a dealership for motor repairs.  Patricia and Lonnie let the other team borrow their boat so they could fish the Mike Van Guilder Memorial tournament on the following day.  Doing this, they were not present to win the Fenwick Rods when their boat number was drawn.  Thank you for your sportsmanship while thinking of your fellow teammates.

Boat number 6B was drawn and the team of Mike Sanders and Matt Lindsey walked away smiling as they carried away their new Fenwick Rods.  Congratulations and enjoy using them the next time you fish!

Sponsor tackle store receipts were drawn; Darin Cox, John Donnelly and Mike Tremont walked away with sponsor swim baits for being present to win!

There seems to be some confusion on how the contest for the Sponsor Tackle Store Receipts is played. You must purchase $20 or more at a qualifying TACKLE STORE ONLY.  Looking through the receipts, we have found one receipt for under $10 plus “cash back” of $20 and gas receipts from the Bait Barn…..these are not eligible.  They must be for TACKLE or MERCHANDISE only (baits, rods, reels, food, gas, etc).  Write your name and phone number on the back of each receipt submitted.

We waited a little longer to start the Award Ceremony at this event for the last teams that weighed in and my staff to load their boats onto their trailers and make the journey back to Glory Hole Sport to attend the Awards Ceremony. Thank you all for waiting around to support your fellow anglers as they accepted their winnings and trophies.

Reminder, the next WRL Delta tournament will be on June 20th and this is a half day event as per Fish & Game regulations.  This event will take place at Russo’s Marina.  Cliff Liddy will be present to make the combination WRL tournament and Persuader Bass Day a fun event for everyone.  Memberships are not required to fish this event so let your “amateur” fishing buddies know.  This will give other anglers a taste of what it is like to fish the WRL and to add tournament experience to their profile!  Remember, if you are using Persuader Baits and our staff boat with Cliff Liddy approaches you, you will receive additional Persuader products.  In addition to that, you have a chance of winning a one year “Pro Staff” contract with Persuader.  This will be a fun event so let every AMATEUR anger know.  The entry form for this event is on the web site, www.100percentbass.com click on 2009 SCHEDULES and click on WINE.  This is the regular entry form so print it off, make checks payable to 100% BASS and mail both to RANDY PRINGLE

Thank you to Melanie, Dan and their staff for opening the store early Saturday morning for us to hold our sign-ups in your store, Glory Hole Sports for this event and for your kind donation of the two $25.00 gift certificates to be used by our anglers at your store.  We appreciate it.  It worked out well having the tall tables, chairs and of course lights for the anglers to use while filling out their entry forms.  Everyone we talked to said it was nice to be inside while they signed up and the coffee was an added bonus for many of the anglers!

We would like to thank Angels Inn for going above and beyond our expectations for their guests.  The general manager and staff there were very polite and we would like to extend our thankfulness to you for accommodating our needs.

I would like to once again thank my terrific staff for making this event run like clockwork Kevin Ryan, Peter Kaprielian, Joel West, Mike Tremont and my wife Sheri.
